How to Trade Futures in a Sensible Manner

by Brian McAboy

How to trade futures is on the minds of thousands of people. With the worsening economy and bleak retirement future, many people are exploring alternate means of making a living. Trading futures is a wonderful business that can be very gratifying and rewarding for those that go about it in a business-like fashion.

Most people see futures trading as a get-rich-quick activity rather than the business that it is, unfortunately. That’s a real shame too, because if a person will simply approach it correctly, how to trade futures can be tremendously simplified. Casual is the best way to describe how most go about it, without the proper respect or formalities of a business. Assuming that they survive in spite of this casual approach, a very high percentage of traders go without making consistent profits months or even years as a result.

The survivial rate is ashamedly low and the success rate is even worse for the few that survive past six months. The success / failure rate for new businesses in any industry is very similar, which is ironic, but often for the same reasons. Insufficient startup capital, lack of a business plan, lack of experience in the industry and lack of experience running a business are include in the causes.

“Treat your trading as the business that it is” sums up in a few words what how to trade futures is really about. Traders would give themselves a tremendous advantage and considerably improved chances of success if traders would do this, and also seek training for building the skills to fulfill the various roles of a self-employed business owner. Of course there is a considerable body of knowledge to becoming a successful futures trader, so anyone considering this occupation should allow for time to develop themselves, and their skills as a trader and as the owner of a business.

Those that are impatient and think that how to trade futures is to simply fund an account, start trading and then wait for the money to start flooding in are in for a rude awakening. Trading futures is a business of skill and involves personal challenges and trials that aren’t commonly experienced in most endeavors. Investing in yourself as the trader to get trained on the business and personal aspects of trading beyond simply knowing your system would be very wise. Owing a trading business entails much more than placing trades, even if you have a proven system to work with.

Substantial advantages are inherent to the business of trading when compared to all other businesses. If you are thinking about entering the field of futures trading, then acknowledge that this is a business and then approach it the same as you would a business in any industry. You are likely to get the same results as the 90% that fail if you follow the same casual approach, and this would be regrettable. Choose the path of the 10% and you are much more likely to realize all that futures trading offers.

How to trade futures is simple in many regards if approached properly, yet can be made tremendously difficult and complex if not. Futures trading will fulfill all your expectations if you simply give it the respect it deserves. If you decide to try to take shortcuts and treat it as a get-rich-quick endeavor, then you’re in for a financial beating.

The best way to go about how to trade futures is with proper training on all the various aspects of the business.
